John F. Palmer House (1893)

The entire village was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970 due to its significance as one of the first planned communities (founded by Frederick Law Olmsted) and the great number of 19th century houses that survive to this day.

This residence was built for John F. Palmer, inventor of the pneumatic tube used in the bicycle and later in automobile tires. He also developed a patent to extend the life of tires. This house was designed by architect Joseph Silsbee, who employed Frank Lloyd Wright and George W. Maher as apprentices.

No Photoshop tricks for scale in these shots! This is a tire/wheel found on gigantic mining haul truck (a dump truck) which can carry 360 tons per load. At 158.5 inches (4.02 meters) high, not only is changing a flat a pain in the arse, but buying a new one would certainly max out the credit card.
